Paul Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay (The plane was named for his mother) died today. He was the first pilot to drop a nuclear bomb on an enemy target. That bomb, code named "little boy" destroied the city of Hiroshima, Japan and was the begining of the end of the war in the pacific. Helping the United States avoid a costly and bloody land invasion.

On August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay departed Tinian Island in the Marianas with Tibbets at the controls at 2:45 a.m. for Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb was dropped at 8:15am local time.
