The picture is from Saipan in 1944. The ditch he is digging is the grave for the thousands of Japanese who found it more noble to die for the Emperor than to surrender when they knew the couldn't win.
It is scary to think that we are once again fighting people whose greatest reward is to die for what they believe in.
We will never know the horrors they witnessed and we can only pray our children don't have to witness it because we ignore history.
