150 years ago this week, the first shots of the war of secession were fired... Mortar shots warning Fort Sumter that the US garrison there needed to be packing up and moving out.
For the first time in over 10 years, this week I picked up a rifle, pistol and saber to reenact the cause.
Some say it was all about slavery... Some say it was about states rights... The truth, as usual is not so simple. Every man went to war for his own reasons. Some sought glory. Some were trying to outrun their past. Some were conscripted and forced to go. Some just went because they believed it was the right thing to do.
I go now because of heritage... Because of history... And because we should never forget that as much as we have in common as countrymen, differences in ideology will make men take up arms to protect their own interests. Especially in times as trying as these, we need to remember.
My home away from home.
Breakfast in camp before the battle.
Gearing up for the front.
